No. Even though you’d think fewer calories is a step in the right direction, diet soda is linked even more closely to obesity than regular soda. One study revealed that people who drank at least one diet soda every day had a 23 percent greater chance of becoming overweight than those who downed one regular soda. The science isn’t fully understood yet—you can read more about it in Chapter 5—but artificial sweeteners are thought to be the main culprits.
